Abstract
To design, 3-D print and test a novel protection system to prevent fall and breakage of lenses used in pan retinal photocoagulation
METHOD
The problem statement of breakage of lenses used in pan retinal photocoagulation due to accidental fall on the floor was identified. A lens guard was designed using CAD rendering and then multiple versions were 3-D printed and tested. Finally a design which best suited for the intended use, at the same time allowing for easy application of laser was arrived at.
RESULTS
A 3-D printed lens guard was made using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The guard held the lens firmly in place and then it was mounted onto the laser slit lamp using a system of cable tie, winding clip and thread lock. Laser was delivered successfully to patients while the lens was mounted inside the guard.
CONCLUSION
This laser lens guard is a very useful tool in the retina clinics laser room in order to prevent the accidental fall and breakage of these lenses.
