Abstract
Aim: To determine the incidence of dry eye disease after small incision cataract surgery.
Methods: 160 patients with senile cataract who underwent small incision cataract surgery (SICS) over a period of 6 months were evaluated postoperatively for dry eye using Schirmer’s test and tear film break up time (TBUT) at 1 week, 1 month, and 2 month follow-up. None of the patients had dry eye preoperatively.
Results: 86 (53.7%) of the patients were men. The majority of the patients complained of itching (60%) and foreign body sensation (53.1%). 134 (83.75%) patients had dry eye at the first follow-up, 62 (38.75%) patients at the second follow-up, and 31 (19.3%) patients at the third follow-up.
Conclusion: There was a high incidence of dry eye disease following SICS. This tended to decrease and normalize by the third follow-up.
