Abstract
Introduction: Trichiatic lashes are commonly treated by epilation with almost 100% recurrence in 4 to 6 weeks. We studied the recurrence rate and complications of radiofrequency(RF) ablation in trichiasis treatment.
Methods: 30 eyes having trichiatic cilia underwent RF ablation. Eyes with entropion and blepharitis were not included. Eyes were followed up and photographed at postoperative day 1, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months and looked for regrowth of lash and development of side effects. Success rate was defined as the proportion of eyes with no regrowth of the cilia at the end of 3rd month follow up.
Results: 3 eyes developed regrowth at 3 months follow up. The success rate was 90% (27 eyes). The recurrence occurred at 6th week in 2 eyes and at 3rd month in 3rd eye. Side effect of pigmentary change was seen in only one eye.
Conclusion: 90% of eyes achieved success within 3 months. Thus RF ablation can be considered as an effective method for trichiasis treatment.
