Abstract
Purpose
To describe the role of three-piece IOL with optic capture in microphthalmic eyes with cataract.
Methods
A prospective study was conducted between Jan 2020 to Jan 2022 including 20 eyes of 10 patients of congenital or developmental cataract with moderate microphthalmos (WTW 8.5 to 9.5 mm). All children underwent lens aspiration with PCCC and AV with a three-piece IOL in sulcus with optic capture.
Results
The mean age was 64 (28) months. 60% of the children had a partially absorbed cataract. The mean WTW was 9.2 (0.4) mm, STS was 8.8 (0.5) mm, and the bag diameter was 7.2 (0.9) mm. Examination under anaesthesia at 3 months follow up revealed a well centred IOL on UBM. At 6 months follow up, none of the patients had glaucoma, corneal decompensation or anterior segment inflammation. None of the cases developed visual axis opacification.
Conclusion
Three-piece IOL with optic capture is a safe option of IOL implantation in eyes with moderate microphthalmos with cataract.
