Abstract

AIM: To study incidence of silicone oil induced ocular hypertension (SOIOH) in post vitrectomy patients with silicone oil tamponade.

Methods: A prospective comparative study of 20 patients undergoing vitrectomy (group 1: with silicone oil tamponade 9 patients; group 2: without silicone tamponade 11 patients) was done. The incidence of SOIOH was determined in a follow up of post- operative 3 months.

Results: 4 patients with silicone tamponade developed ocular hypertension at end of 2 months. When compared with baseline IOP, mean IOP in group 1 increased by 9.0±1.8 mmHg (P=0.001) and in group 2 by 1.0±0.86 mmHg (P=0.49). Post-operative IOP was compared between two groups and found significantly (p<0.05) higher in group 1. Conclusion: Silicone tamponade is associated with ocular hypertension. If IOP is not controlled with conventional treatment, silicone oil removal should be considered.
