Abstract
Introduction:
Overlap of rhexis over intraocular lens optic is recommended for better refractive outcomes
Aim:
To compare the change in refractive error at 5 years between eyes with and without rhexis overlap
Methodology:
Patients included in the study formed the control group of a study to compare outcomes of phacoemulsification in pseudoexfoliation. Their refractive data at 5 years was compared to that at 1 month in eyes with overlap (group 1) and without overlap (group 2).
Results:
At 5 years follow up, there were 240 eyes in in group 1 and 75 in group 2. Spherical Equivalent at 1 month and 5 years was 0.01(±0.7)D and 0.25(±0.5)D in group 1 and 0.04(±0.4)D and 0.13(±0.5)D in group 2 respectively. Change in refraction between 1 month and 5 years was 0.23(±0.7)D in group 1 and 0.10(±0.4)D in group 2 (p 0.519 ) . More eyes in group 2 had hypermetropic shift (53.3% vs 47.5%) and myopic shift (26.7% vs19.2%)
Conclusion:
Long term refractive outcomes were similar in both groups
