Abstract
Purpose: To study the clinical profile, retinal imaging, treatment, and outcomes of patients with Coats disease with age greater than 50 years.
Methods: Cross-sectional, observational, hospital-based study
Results: 37 eyes presented with coats disease over ten years with prevalence of 0.0013%. Mean age was 60.1 years. Most were males (56.53%) with unilateral presentation (87.9%). Most common stage was foveal exudation (43.24%), non foveal exudation (29.72%), foveal retinal detachment (10.81%), Telangiectasia (8.1%), Extrafoveal retinal detachment (5.4%) and neovascular glaucoma (2.7%). 48.64% eyes were treated, either with laser (44.4%), laser with intravitreal injections (27.7%) or intravitreal injections (16.6%). Amongst treated eyes, 50% showed visual improvement.
Conclusion: Coats disease rarely presents after 50 years of age and is more likely to be bilateral, female, with foveal exudation and foveal retinal detachment than in younger patients . Treatment outcomes are limited.
