Abstract

Aim: To compare the impact of Sibling Motivational Card (SMC) over verbal counselling in screening siblings of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) probands Methods: Probands were randomised into two groups. 116 probands were verbally counselled with a standard template about the importance of family screening so as to bring their siblings for screening. 118 probands were randomized to SMC group, in addition to counselling, they were also given a SMC bearing the details of proband, sibling and a message stressing the importance of family screening. The number of siblings turning out were assessed to know the impact of SMC. Results: 95 siblings of 234 POAG probands were screened. The percentage of siblings screened were more in verbal group (51.7%) as compared to SMC group (29.6%). 43(45%) siblings had some form of glaucoma. Conclusion: Verbal counselling proved to be better than issuing SMC. Our study stresses the importance of verbal counselling and sibling screening in POAG probands
