Abstract
Aim: To review the etiology, management & outcome of traumatic nasolacrimal duct obstruction(NLDO).Methods: Retrospective analysis of 30 patients with traumatic NLDO during a 5 year period was done. Mode of injury, clinical signs, management & follow-up were evaluated. Results: Mean age of patients was 32 years. Most common cause was road traffic accidents(76%) resulting in naso-orbito-ethmoidal fractures(66%). All patients underwent with computed tomography-dacryocystography(CT-DCG). 27 patients underwent external dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR) with(60%) or without (30%)silicone intubation & rest 3 had dacryocystectomy. Follow-up ranged from 1-5 years. Functional & anatomical success was noted in 24 patients post external DCR with or without intubation. Conclusion: Naso-orbito-ethmoidal fracture is the main cause of traumatic NLDO with telecanthus an important presenting sign. CT-DCG is useful in preoperative surgical planning. External DCR with or without intubation gives good outcome.
