Abstract
Methods: We performed a randomized prospective comparative clinical trial involving children undergoing surgery for congenital or developmental cataract. Surgical incisions were closed with either 10-0 Nylon (group 1) or 10-0 Vicryl sutures (group 2).
Results: A total of 168 eyes (84 eyes in each group) were included in this study, out of which 164 eyes (97.62%) underwent surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The incidence of postoperative complications was significant (p<0.001) only at 6-week follow-up visit with nylon group showing higher incidence of loose sutures [65 (26%)] and mucous debris [65 (26%)] compared to the vicryl group [loose sutures: 5(2%), mucous debris: 7(2.8%)]. Conclusion: The most common suture related complication was loose suture in both groups. vicryl suture avoids an additional examination under anesthesia (EUA) for suture removal, therefore might be more cost effective and less complication rate and thus safe for children aged 3-10 years.
