Abstract
Background: TNON may cause severe visual loss; however timely management gives favourable results. The purpose of this study is to report TNON in 7 young and healthy women belonging to an indigenous tribal community of north east India.
Methods: A detailed medical and dietary history was taken. Clinical evaluation along with visual fields and OCT studies were done. All patients were started on oral vitamin B complex supplementation for a period of 3 months.
Results: 5 patients gave history of tobacco use in solid form while 2 patients gave history of smoking. All 7 patients who had presented with bilateral diminution of vision had a statistically significant (P<.05) improvement in visual acuity and visual field indices after treatment. Conclusion: Nutritional and toxic optic neuropathy may coexist. The mainstay of treatment involves replacing deficient nutrients and eliminating offending toxins. It is also important to consider contributory social, economic and dietary practices.
