Abstract
Thyroid eye disease(TED) is caused by the activation of orbital fibroblasts by autoantibodies directed against thyroid receptors.
Aim- To study the prevalence of TED and most common clinical presentation in patients of systemic thyroid disorder.
Materials and methods-This was a cross sectional study with a sample size of 236 outpatients with systemic thyroid disorder presenting at a tertiary eye care centre in North Chennai from Nov 2020 to March 2022. Diagnosis of TED is made on the basis of diagnostic criteria.
Results- TED was diagnosed in 7 patients out of 236 dysthyroid patients .. The prevalence was found to be 2.9% with a similar prevalence in males and females. Proptosis was the most common clinical presentation. 11 eyes had proptosis indicating a 2.3% of proptosis among patients with thyroid disorder.
Conclusion- The prevalence of TED found to be lower compared to other studies.Unlike other studies proptosis is the most common clinical presentation in this study.
