Abstract
A 27-year-old male presented with a sudden defective vision on his left eye. Being a tattoo artist, he had self-attempted eyeball tattooing with red ink. On examination,he could only perceive hand movements in his left eye. Slit lamp examination revealed a subconjunctival haemorrhage with interspersed ink. The cornea had a greenish hue, and the anterior chamber was filled with ink-suspended aqueous humour. The lens showed a red capsular hue with cataractous change. On fundus examination, the vitreous was red-tinged with macular thickening. The optical coherence tomography showed inner retinal hyper-reflectivity with retinal thickening, Right eye BCVA 6/12 – Anterior&posterior segment within normal limit. The patient was treated with topical steroids and was advised of cataract surgery. However, the patient was lost to follow-up. As these “Do it yourself” manoeuvres are becoming trends influenced by social media, we report a case of self- attempted eyeball tattooing and its complications.
