Abstract
Aim: To compare role of IVD and systemic steroids for preventing cystoid macular edema (CME) in patients with intermediate or posterior uveitis (IU/PU), planned for cataract surgery.
Method: a prospective study was done in 40 Patients with IU/PU and cataract visiting tertiary eye centre from July 2021 to June 2022. Cases were divided into Group 1 (20 eyes) receiving IVD during surgery and Group 2 (20 eyes) with oral steroids 2 days before surgery, tapered over 4–6 weeks. Follow-up was done for 6 months. Postoperative CMO, change in BCVA, Central Subfield thickness (CST) and complications were noted.
Result: Mean age was 45.5 ± 4.25 years. 2 cases (Group1) and 4 cases (Group2) showed CME at follow-up. BCVA improved significantly in both groups. CST change was insignificant. 5 patients (Group1) needed IOP lowering drugs. 3 cases (Group 2) had early steroid taper.
Conclusion: IVD is good alternative as prophylaxis in IU/PU undergoing cataract surgery to prevent postoperative CMO.
