Abstract
Ocular syphilis can have varied presentations. Retinitis happens to be a severe form of presentation that can lead to permanent vision loss. However, if treated appropriately and in time the damage can be reversed.
We present a case of ocular syphilis that showed reversal of the lesions after appropriate therapy. A 32-year-old male came with complaints of left eye diminution of vision for 4-5 days with no past ocular history and a past medical history positive for typhoid fever. On examination visual acuity was 6/18 and CF 1m in right (OD) and left eye (OS) respectively. Both eyes’ anterior segments were normal and the posterior segment had retinitis patches with subretinal fluid and vitreous debris. Diagnosis of both eyes ocular syphilis was made after serological investigations. After treatment with systemic benzylpenicillin, the condition resolved and the best-corrected visual acuity improved to 6/6 and 6/18 in OD and OS, respectively.
