Abstract
Retinal vein occlusions are an important cause of vision loss. The risk factors includes advancing age, systemic hypertension, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, blood hyperviscosity, thrombophilia, ocular hypertension, raised plasma homocysteine levels. Atherosclerotic plaques occur in young people with homocystinuria who suffer from premature, aggressive arterial and venous occlusive disease. Studies suggest a decreased incidence of stroke and cardiovascular events after reduction of plasma homocysteine levels through folic acid supplementation. There is little data suggesting the prevention of ocular vascular events through folic acid supplementation.
We studied 30 patients of retinal vascular occlusions and found homocysteine to be increased in 12 patients. Here we describe variable clinical presentations of retinal vascular occlusions in patients with increased homocysteine levels in a tertiary care center.
