Abstract
Aim:To study progression of posterior vitreous detachment in patients undergoing uneventful phacoemulsification, using indirect ophthalmoscopy and ultrasound B-scan
Methods: Patients who underwent phacoemulsification were examined preoperatively and at 1 and 6 month review visits.
Results:112 out of 166 patients had preoperative PVD, where 99(59.64%) had incomplete PVD & 13(7.83%) had complete PVD. 6 and 15 patients with preoperative incomplete PVD progressed to complete PVD by 1 and 6 months, respectively. From the 34 patients who showed progression by 6 months, there were 15 males & 19 females. No statistically significant difference was noted in progression of PVD with age, gender, axial length or phacoemulsification time. No PVD related complications like retinal breaks, retinal detachment were noted during the follow up period.
Conclusion:There is progression of PVD following phacoemulsification. Preoperative counselling and need for longer and regular follow ups are essential.
