Abstract
To study the patient perception and surgical safety with sub-Tenon’s block for 23G Pars Plana Vitrectomy. Retrospective review of 35 Patients, 23G pars plana vitrectomy for indications other than retinal detachment. After topical anaesthesia, Toothed Lims forceps is used to grip the conjunctiva and Tenon’s capsule, Followed by incision to expose the white sclera. Injection performed with blunt 23G, bent cannula with 5ml of 2% lignocaine. Mean surgical time was 34.0 min. Very limited akinesia during the procedure. Pain perception-Intraoperatively low, pain perception grade, 28 (80%) had no pain during the block, 7(20%) had mild pain, None (0%) had moderate or severe, Postoperatively all had no pain perception. There was very limited akinesia during the procedure. There were no anaesthesia related major complications. Chemosis and conjunctival haemorrhage were common without intraoperative problems. Sub-tenon’s anesthesia is safe, comfortable to patient & effective for surgeon.
