Abstract
OBJECTIVE:To establish the trend of corneal sensations following Phacoemulsification (PCS) and manual small incision cataract surgeries (MSICS)
METHODS:Patients ≥40 yrs undergoing cataract surgeries had their baseline corneal sensations measured pre-operatively with Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer. Patients were followed up at 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 & 6 months post-surgery. The sensations quantified in the various zones of the cornea were analysed and its correlation to the placement of the surgical incision were studied.
RESULTS:Corneal sensations were adversely affected in both the study groups, statistically more in the immediate post-op period. The recovery was significantly quicker in the PCS group (by 3 month & complete in 6 month) whereas the SICS group reaching the near normal values by the 6 month follow up visit.
CONCLUSION:Both the study groups PCS group exhibited a linear recovering trend of the sensations, with a faster recovery in the PCS group reaching the baseline values.
