Abstract
Our study included patients with primary senile cataract who underwent phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens(IOL) implantation. IOL power calculation was done using SRK/T and Barrett universal II (BU-II) formulae. A sample of 218 eyes enrolled in the study was divided into three groups based on their axial lengths: Group 1(AL <22mm, N-46), Group 2(AL 22-24.5, N-125) and Group3(AL>24.5,N-47). The BU-II formula gave the lowest mean absolute errors on POD1,7 AND 30 in the entire study and in the three groups. On comparison by Mann-Whitney U test ,statistically significant difference was noted on POD7 and POD30(p value <0.05). The percentage of eyes in which the prediction error was within ±1D and ±0.5D of the targeted refraction was highest with BU-II formula on POD 30. Hence we infer that predictive accuracy of BU-II formula is superior to SRK/T formula over a wide range of axial lengths.
