Abstract
Purpose: To study the clinico-microbiological profile, visual outcomes and predictors of visual prognosis after pediatric cataract surgery. Methodology: This is a retrospective chart review of the children diagnosed and treated as pediatric endophthalmitis post-cataract surgery over 10 years. All the relevant details including presenting signs and symptoms, smear and culture reports, virulence of the organism and antibiotic sensitivity reports were collected at presentation and subsequent visits with a minimum follow up period of 6 months. Results: The mean age was 10.83 ± 5 years (range: 4-17 years). The mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at presentation was 2.89 ± 1.37 log MAR units which had improved remarkably to 1.11 ± 1.46 log MAR units at final follow up visit (p-value:0.005) Conclusion: Gram positive cocci were the most common cause of pediatric endophthalmitis. Poor ocular hygiene and low compliance to medications were the key predisposing factors.
