Abstract
Aim
To evaluate the efficacy of topical interferon (IFN) in patients developing pseudophakic cystoid macular edema
Material & Method
Prospective, interventional study on patients having CME after cataract surgery. Patients consenting for the study were advised to use topical IFN drops 4 times/day (1MIU/ml)
OCT was done at the baseline and on each follow-up
Result
13 eyes of 13 patients diagnosed with P‑CME were studied. Mean central macular Thickness (CMT) on OCT at the presentation (n = 13) CMT on OCT at the presentation (n = 13) and at 4 weeks post topical IFN therapy (n = 10) was 557 µm (range: 352–705 µm) and 353 µm (range: 240–394 µm), respectively. All eyes had PCR, 9 patients had regular follow‑up for 6 months. The mean duration of complete resolution of CME was 6 weeks in these patients. Relapse was seen in 2 patients
No ocular or systemic side effects related to the topical IFN therapy were noted
Conclusion
Topical IFN therapy can be an effective choice of treatment for CME
