Abstract
Aim: To study effects of serum hcys level on DR and DME. Methods: In this study, patients who had undergone serum hcys levels during Jan 19 – Dec 21 were included. Effects of serum hcys level on patients with no DM, patients with and without DR and with or without DME were analysed with statistical tests. Results: 1762 eyes of 1058 patients were included. 945 eyes of 533 patients had DM of which 409 eyes had some stage of DR. Patient’s with DM had significantly lower serum hcys levels than patients with no DM (p=0.001). DR patients had high serum hcys levels compared to no DR group. With increasing severity of DR, serum hcys levels were rising. DR patients with DME showed significantly high serum hcys levels than patients without DME (p<0.05). Conclusion: Moderately elevated serum hcys levels were seen with increasing severity of DR and DME. Control of serum hcys levels in addition to strict DM control may have a beneficial effect on controlling DR and DME progression.
