Abstract
Purpose – Identify the occurrence of sterile/infective endophthalmitis (SE/IE) following Intravitreal Triamcinolone acetionide (IVTA), its course and treatment.
Material – Retrospective study of patients with endophthalmitis following IVTA injection.
Results: Fifty IVTA injections were performed over 6 months. Four eyes had SE/IE with incidence of 8.00%. Presentation was 2-8 hours post injection with reduced vision. It ranged from perception of light to counting fingers at 2 ft. Treatment included vitreous tap, intravitreal injection of antibiotics and dexamethasone & vitrectomy. Frequent topical prednisolone acetate, fortified antibiotics & atropine given. SE resolved in 3-4 weeks with persistent floaters. One eye with IE was lost despite treatment. Follow-up at 3 months had visual acuity at last follow-up of 20/75 (range 20/40 to 20/125).
Conclusion- Acute presumed SE following IVTA presents early with good outcome but IE is unpredictable. Differentiating between them is important.
