Abstract
Purpose: The present study was conducted to study retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness in patients of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).Patients and methods: In this hospital-based prospective cross sectional study, 90 (180 eyes) newly diagnosed OSA patients aged > 18 years were enrolled. Based on apnea hypopnea index (AHI) there were 38.8%, 30% and 31.2% cases of mild , moderate , and severe OSA, respectively. OCT was done using CIRRUS HD-OCT 500 to measure RNFL thickness. Results: The average RNFL thickness among the three OSA groups was inversely associated with AHI (p=0.02). Severe OSA patients had thinner average RNFL thickness as compared to mild and moderate OSA (p=0.04 and p=0.01, respectively). The differences in the intraocular pressure (IOP) among the three OSA groups were also statistically significant (p<0.0008). Conclusions: OSA patients should be screened for glaucoma as early detection of glaucoma can prevent blindness in these patients.
