Abstract
Purpose: Outcome of universal eye screening of newborn(UESN) in a tertiary health care system. Method: UESN was done for all newborns within 7 days of birth(not falling under ROP screening criteria) in paediatric units of a medical college and a multi-speciality hospital for two years. Data included demography, obstetric and neonatal history, ocular and systemic pathology.Result:1795 newborns were examined, 991(55.2%) were male. Systemic and ocular pathology was seen in 227 (12.7%) and 326 (18.2%) babies respectively. In multivariable analysis, retinal hemorrhages(RH) were associated with normal vaginal deliveries (OR:10.1; 95% CI:6.9-15) and non-RH pathologies were associated with preterm babies(OR: 5.6;95%CI: 3.5-9.0), consanguinity (OR:2.3;95%CI:1.3-4.1), LBW(OR:8.8;95%CI:5.1-15.1), systemic abnormalities(OR: 3.3;95%CI:2.0-5.3).Conclusion: We recommend UESN for babies with risk factors like prematurity, LBW, consanguinity, bad obstetric history and systemic abnormalities.
