Abstract
Purpose: Estimate prevalence, severity and the risk factors for DR in patients of type 1 diabetes mellitus
METHODS:384 patients with type 1 DM were recruited between May 2019 to May 2020. Retinopathy was graded by fundus photography and classified as mild, moderate, severe NPDR and PDR, with and without DME. Risk factors for the development of diabetic retinopathy were noted and statistical correlation determined.
RESULTS:Median age of patients was 28 years, mean duration of diabetes was 15years. Diabetic retinopathy was present in 20% of total patients. 60%, 13% and 3% had mild, moderate and severe NPDR respectively. PDR: 24%, 26% of all patients with DR had DME. The risk factors longer duration of diabetes (OR 11.1; CI 1.5-82.7), higher serum levels of total cholesterol (OR 2.2; CI 1.2-4.0) and concurrent presence of diabetic nephropathy (OR 7.2; CI 2.7-19.3)
CONCLUSION:Though overall prevalence of retinopathy was relatively low, significant number of patients had PDR and DME
