Abstract
Intermittent exotropia are most common of all exotropias. Asians have a higher prevalence of exotropias than caucasians or africans.
Why do we need to treat Intermittent exotropias ? – In all kinds of strabismus, Intermittent Exotropias has 2% prevalence and of all exotropias intermittent exotropias count around 60 % which is significant. The progression to constancy is around 75% and only 28.2 % of these have good stereopsis. Considering the number of occupations that rely on binocular vision early treatment for regaining stereopsis is necessary.
When to treat? – Out of 38 patients which had intermittent exotropia, all were started on non surgical treatment and out of these 14 needed surgical treatment. The key to early binocularity is to operate as soon as the distance becomes constant.
What are the results? – The stereopsis recovery is significantly high (p= 0.003) if treated early.
The early treatment to improve binocularity is important in securing child’s future
