Abstract

Purpose

To describe demographics, clinical characteristics, outcome of therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty at 1, 6 month & 3 year follow up

Method

1140 donor eyes received in 2016, 341 – used for corneal transplantation.

Result

Mean age – 52.8 years. Average waiting time for donor cornea – 5.1 days. Commonest indications for TPK – perforated infectious ulcer 44.3%, non-healing ulcers 28.9%, graft infections 16.8%. Fungal etiology- 62.3%, bacterial -16.2%. At 1 month 89% got therapeutic success. At 6 months, 86.3% got anatomical success, 78.2% functional success,14% ambulatory vision. 24% recipients followed up until 3 years; 3 had clear graft after primary TPK, 9 had clear graft after optical keratoplasty, 15 had failed grafts and 5 lost globe tectonicity.

Conclusion

TPK offers good anatomical and therapeutic success for infectious keratitis. But, the uptake for an optical keratoplasty after a failed graft and long term functional success remains poor in these set of population.
