Abstract
A novel technique of utilising decelluarised extracellular matrix of human and bovine corneas as a potential source of a hydrogel based bio-ink is introduced here. This bioink is used in further biofabrication technique to design customised corneal lenticules or full thickness corneas using a 3D bioprinter. This can be transplanted as a hydrogel itself or as a printed corneal lenticule in a established rabbit corneal scar model. The subsequent improvement in corneal curvature transparency and thickness shows a possibility of a novel therapy in treating corneal scars, perforations, Keratoconus and as a alternative to corneal transplantations. Addition of Mesenchymal stromal stem cells to enhance remodelling is also explored.
