Abstract
PURPOSE: To develop a normative database of retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness in Indian children between 6 to 18 years using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
METHODS: A retrospective review of SD-OCT of children aged 6 to 18 years, was done. The children had undergone optic nerve head analysis using the RNFL analysis protocol, along with axial length (AL) using IOL Master.
RESULTS: Mean age of children was 12.12 ± 2.80 years and they had an AL of 23.19 ± 0.89 mm.The average RNFL thickness was found to be 99.39 ± 10.13µ. RNFL was thickest in the superior quadrant (129.15 ± 18.53µ) and thinnest in the temporal quadrant (65.50 ± 9.81µ). Only the temporal quadrant thickness was significantly different amongst males and females (67.15µ vs 63.68µ, p=0.01).
CONCLUSIONS: Measurements may vary according to age, gender and IOP. However, normative database should help us in assessing the children with glaucoma and other optic nerve diseases.
