Abstract

Aim: The aim was to assess various causative factors of sixth nerve palsy Design: Retrospective case-based study. 82 patients with sixth nerve palsy were recruited in our study. Results: Of the 82 neurologically isolated cases, age presentation was between 3 months to 88 years of age. Most common sex was Male 52(63%) and Female 30 (37%). More common cause of 6th nerve palsy in our study was Vasculopathic 40(49%) followed by Trauma 9(11%), Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension 4(5%), Congenital 4(5%), Aneurysm 2(2%), Tumor 1(1%), Inflammatory 5(6%), Viral 1(1%), Undetermined 13(16%), Cavernous sinus thrombosis 2(2%), Cortical vein thrombosis 1(1%) Conclusions: In the absence of risk factors, a suggestive history, or positive laboratory and clinical findings, neuroimaging can serve as a useful diagnostic tool in identifying the exact cause of sixth nerve palsy.
