Abstract

Aim: To evaluate changes in central and peripheral contrast sensitivity (CS) and OCT parameters in patients with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH).

Design: Pilot observational study

Methods: CS assessment using both Pelli–Robson (PR) and Spaeth–Richman Contrast Sensitivity Test (SPARCS) was done in 20 eyes of treatment-naïve IIH patients along with OCT scans. Comparative analysis was done at follow-up > 12 months (range: 18–24 months).

Results: Female preponderance (80%, n = 8) was noted. Change in SPARCS CS was significant in total score (p = 0.035) and in three peripheral areas (p<0.05). Significant difference in RNFL thickness (p = 0.007) and nasal macular thickness (MT) (p = 0.006) was seen between eyes with and without recurrence. Conclusion: Peripheral CS showed significant change in eyes with recurrence, even with intact visual acuity and preserved central CS. Changes in RNFL thickness and nasal MT could differentiate eyes which developed recurrence from normal eyes
