Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcomes of immediate sequential bilateral vitreo-retinal surgery (ISBVS) in progressive advanced (stage 4A, stage 4B and early stage 5) ROP.
METHODS: Prospective interventional trial for 1year. 48 eyes of 24 babies with bilateral progressive stage 4A/4B, early stage 5 ROP underwent bilateral 25/27 G ROP surgery
RESULTS :The cumulative exposure to anaesthesia for both eyes if operated separately would be 210.7 minutes which was found to be much higher than the actual time taken for immediate sequential surgery of both eyes in same sitting [ISBVS] (154.9 minutes). The ‘p’ value calculated was < 0.0001 at 95 % CI which is highly statistically significant. In our study, we found out that 38 eyes (79.1%) have regressed completely and 7 eyes (14.6%) had partial regression and 3 eyes (6.3%) went into ROP sequelae. CONCLUSION: ISBVS allows timely surgical intervention in both eyes with advanced ROP with good outcomes with less anesthesia exposure time.
