Abstract
Purpose: To put forward a newer technique of nucleofractis by “sideways sculpting” in the case of posterior polar cataract (PPC) with nuclear sclerosis.
Method: It is a retrospective analysis of 17 eyes who had PPC. After controlled hydrodelineation, a “+” or sideways sculpting with the phaco tip without rotating the lens was performed, maintaining the integrity of the epinuclear portion of the lens and chopping the fragmented nuclear quadrants.
Results: The nucleus and epinucleus were easily removed in 17 cases using the sideways sculpting technique. It is a helpful technique for harder grades of cataracts because the nucleus must be divided, as opposed to softer grades of nuclear sclerosis where the nucleus can be aspirated without dividing. A “sideways sculpting” procedure reduces anticipated intraoperative posterior capsular dehiscence. Conclusion: This surgical technique provides nuclear separation and emulsification without exerting traction on the weak posterior capsule.
