Abstract
Cataract surgery in patients with corneal opacity (CO) is challenging due to limited microscopic view during surgery. Two eighty-six patients of cataract with CO who underwent Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSCIS) during a 2-year period were reviewed retrospectively for intra-operative complications and post-operative visual outcomes and complications. Intra-operative complication rate (4.54%) was more than that in normal MSICS (1.99%); which included-7 posterior capsular rent with vitreous disturbance, 2 zonular dialysis, 2 iridodialysis and 2 eyes with aphakia. On follow-up, 6 patients had decentered intraocular lens and 10 had residual cortex. Median logMAR vision improved significantly(p<0.001) from1.08(5/60) pre-operatively to 0.3(6/12) post-operatively. MSCIS is thus efficient in providing favourable visual outcomes in patients where CO makes it difficult for the surgeon to perform a phacoemulsification surgery
