Abstract

AIM:To find out efficacy and safety profile of chloroquine phosphate eye drops in dry eye patients.

METHODS: This prospective case control study was carried out on 226 patients who came with symptoms of dry eye.Patients were randomly divided into two groups;GroupA 113 patients who received carboxymethylcellulose eye drops and Group B 113 patients who received chloroquine phosphate eye drops.All patients underwent Visual acuity, tonometry, color vision, Schirmer test, lissamine green stain, fluorescein stain and ocular surface disease index(OSDI) was assigned to each.

RESULTS: Mean age of patients was 54.8 +/-9.6 years and 72.87% were females. Significant improvement was observed in Schirmer’s test and fluorescein and lissamine green staining pattern in group B patients. OSDI scores also decreased in patients using chloroquine eye drops.

CONCLUSION: Chloroquine eye drops was found to be more effective than carboxymethylcellulose eye drops in dry eye patients.
