Abstract

Nearly 1.9% of global blindness is caused by glaucoma. Glaucoma is the second most prevalent cause of vision loss worldwide. In India, glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness with at least 12 million people blind from the disease . More than 90 percent of cases of glaucoma remain undiagnosed in the community. The aim of this paper is to do a institution based cross sectional study to find out the prevalence and associated risk factors of glaucoma in elderly patients above 40 years presenting to OPD in a private medical college hospital .

After on estimating the prevalence of glaucoma and assessment of its appropriate risk factors, public awareness programs about the identified risk factors for prevention and early detection of cases is essential and treatment modalities could be initiated as early as possible and thereby preventing the blindness caused by the disease.
