Abstract
Purpose:Inadequate tamponade can result in recurrent retinal detachment.Normative data on vitreous cavity volume is sparse.Measuring the volume can allow use of appropriate volume of silicone oil & pure gas in an air filled eye to achieve the non expansile concentration.Method:In the 48 patients so enrolled, the vitrectomized volume of the vitreous cavity was measured by collecting the fluid removed during fluid air exchange in a syringe using a soft tip cannula connected to a PVC tubing, the distal end of which opened into a 10cc syringe without the plunger. Results:Among the 48 patients,15 were phakic eyes,28 pseudophakic & 5 aphakic. The average Axial length was 23.77mm & the average vitreous cavity volume was 4.69mm.Conclusion:Quantity of tamponade injection is based on subjective estimation.Accurate assessement of vitreous cavity volume can enable in precise quantification of tamponade thereby enabling better surgical outcomes & corresponding economic benefits due to lesser wastage.
