Abstract
Valsalva retinopathy is an uncommon disease categorized as “Unspecified Background retinopathy, ICD-9-CM 362.10” with preretinal hemorrhage due to sudden increase in intrathoracic or intrabdominal pressure in an otherwise healthy eye. We present a case of Valsalva retinopathy in 21-year pregnant woman. All systemic and biochemical parameters were within normal limits. Fundus examination revealed a fresh large preretinal hemorrhage covering macula reducing vision to hand movements in left eye. ETDRS circle analysis on OCT showing not measurable thickness at superior quadrant of 6mm diameter, 920micron at 3mm and 826 microns at 1mm. Volume analysis of measured area showing 12.76 ml OS as compared to 8.83 ml in the non-affected right eye. 3.93ml of blood is noted which disappeared after 12 weeks without any residual visual loss or structural abnormality. Conclusion: Volumetric analysis by OCT may be considered in all pre retinal hemorrhage to find out a critical value for visual recovery.
