Abstract

A case control study including 19 cases of ON and 15 controls was conducted to evaluate Microperimetry as a tool for retinal sensitivity in optic neuritis and to correlate retinal sensitivity with anatomical changes in ON. Retinal mean sensitivity(MS) was measured using MAIA and RNFL thickness and HVF 30-2MD were evaluated at presentation and 3 months follow up in affected, fellow and control eyes. LogMAR BCVA in affected was 0.79 ±0.08 which improved significantly to 0.24 ±0.06 at 3 months.MS(dB) improved from 9.42 ±7.08 to 20.43 ±3.82 in affected eyes and from 20.12 ±7.34 to 23.52 ±5.03 in fellow eyes. Significant correlation was seen between BCVA and MS, MS and RNFL thickness, MS and HVF 30-2MD in affected eyes at baseline and 3 months. We concluded that microperimetry may be able to pick up subtle changes in retinal sensitivity, specially in fellow eye of patients with ON with significant correlation between structural and functional parameters of retina in these patients.
