Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare the accuracy of macular ganglion cell layer [GCL] thickness obtained by the macular retinal layer segmentation software of Spectralis SD OCT, with circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer [cp RNFL] thickness, in discriminating normal and glaucomatous eyes.The study was designed as a prospective , cross- sectional, observational study.100 glaucoma patients and an equal number of controls were compared.Using the Spectralis SD OCT, the macular ganglion cell thickness map was obtained by segmentation . CpRNFL global thickness had the highest diagnostic capacity[AUROC 0.816] with a cutoff value ≤90 microns, followed by GCL outer temporal zone[AUROC 0.796]with a cutoff value≤31microns. Every one micron thickness increment in the temporal outer zone of GCL was associated with an 84% reduction in the likelihood of having glaucoma.The ability of segmented macular GCL thickness to discriminate glaucomatous eyes is high and comparable to that of cpRNFL.
