Abstract
Aim
To assess the clinical profile and prognostic factors of patients with neovascular glaucoma (NVG).
Methodology
Prospective observational study of 33 patients newly diagnosed with NVG
Results
The mean BCVA at presentation was LogMAR 2.0±0.9 which reduced to LogMAR 2.1±0.9 at 3 months, in 48% of patients. The most common cause for NVG was Central retinal vein occlusion (54.54%). IOP at 3 months was lower than at presentation (30.5± 16.9 vs 46.3±13.3). The anterior chamber angle progressively closed over 3 months with 22 patients out of 33 having peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS). Of all the ocular prognostic factors compared, only PAS was found to correlate with the presence of NVI at 3 months (p value 0.036) inspite of treatment. Most of the patients attained IOP control with single anti glaucoma medication at 3 months.
Conclusion
NVG has poor visual prognosis, therefore timely treatment of primary cause should be done. Routine gonioscopy and documentation of PAS is advocated.
