Abstract
Aim: Report trend in ciprofloxacin(CP), ofloxacin(OX), gatifloxacin(GT) and moxifloxacin(MX) resistance in isolates from bacterial keratitis. Methods: Retrospective case series (2005-2020). Susceptibility by Kirby Bauer method. Results: Correlation within all fluoroquinolones(FQ) was high (Pearson value >0.5; p<0.001). Linear resistance trend in gram-positive bacteria(GPB) was reducing for CP(p<0.001), OX(p=0.032) and MX(p<0.001), but increasing for GT (p=0.048); for gram-negative bacteria(GNB) was reducing for CP(p=0.025), but not for OX (p=0.110), GT(p=0.447) and MX (p=0.160). Cefuroxime had high sensitivity in FQ-resistant S epidermidis(100%), FQ-resistant S pneumoniae(100%), and FQ-resistant S aureus(50-88%), while colistin had highest sensitivity (92-100%) for FQ-resistant P aeruginosa. Conclusion: In last 2 decades, GT sensitivity is reducing; in GNB OX, GT, MOX sensitivity is reducing. Alternatives in FQ-resistant GPB can be cefuroxime, and in FQ-resistant GNB can be colistin.
