Abstract
A retrospective study of 15 patients who underwent surgical correction for consecutive exotropia between 2019 to 2022 and the surgical outcome per mm of muscle operated was analyzed. Patients underwent either medial rectus advancement or combined medial rectus advancement and lateral rectus recession. Patients were followed up for a minimum period of six month post operatively. Average age at primary surgery for esotropia was 5.8 years in our study and the mean age at surgery for consecutive exotropia was 24.2 years. The mean pre-operative deviation was 45 PD and the average amount of deviation corrected was 36.4 PD. Cosmetically good outcomes were obtained in all the patients and the correction obtained per mm of muscle operated ranged between 2.6 PD to 4.5 PD. The mean surgical dosage obtained per mm of muscle operated was 3.6 PD. Careful history taking, analyzing previous surgery details and proper pre operative planning are required for managing eyes with consecutive exotropia.
