Abstract
AIM: To evaluate changes in ocular surface of patients with glaucoma on topical hypotensive medications.
METHODS : In a study of 80 patients – 40 patients with glaucoma on topical antiglaucoma medications (AGM) and 40 controls were asked to answer Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, to calculate the OSDI score, and underwent tear film break up time test (TBUT), Schirmer’s test, fluorescein staining and conjunctival impression cytology(CIC).
RESULTS:
50% cases had OSDI of mild to moderate dry eye symptoms. There was increase in OSDI score, decrease in Schirmer’s ,TBUT value and goblet cell density in patients on multiple AGM compared to those on single drug and fixed combination therapy, and also in patients with increased duration of drug use.
CONCLUSION:
AGM causes ocular surface changes in terms of increased OSDI score, abnormal dry eye test parameters and decreased goblet cell density in patients on multiple AGM and those with increased duration of drug use.
