Abstract
Purpose: To report the development of full-thickness macular hole (MH) after scleral buckling surgery (SB) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD). We also evaluated the anatomical and visual outcomes of MH repair.
Methods: A retrospective study of medical records and OCT images of patients in whom MH developed after SB was done.
Results: A postoperative MH was detected in 4 patients who underwent SB for RRD. All had macula off RRD without MH at the time of surgery. Subretinal fluid drainage was done in all 4 eyes. There were 3 women and one man with a mean age of 54.3 years (range 48-64 years). On an average the MH developed within 7 days of surgery(range 1-8 days). The patients subsequently underwent vitrectomy with ILM peeling for MH repair. Closure was achieved in 3 cases(75%) with ≥3 line improvement in 2 patients.
Conclusion: Macular hole may develop after SB for RRD, and these cases can be surgically repaired. The pathogenesis of the formation of these holes remains unclear.
