Abstract
This retrospective study aimed at comparing different endophthalmitis prophylaxis methods adopted in cataract
surgery over the years in community eye care section of a tertiary eye care hospital in South India and to report their outcomes. From 2013 to 2015 Tobramycin was added to Balanced Salt Solution (BSS) (Group A). From March 2015 to January 2017 intracameral Moxifloxacin was given (Group B). From February 2017 to December Amikacin was added to BSS (Group C). 42 cases of post-operative endophthalmitis were reported in the total study period (0.02%). There was a significant improvement in endophthalmitis rates in group C when compared
with group A (p=0.04) and with group B (p=0.006). Our study showed a high incidence of nocardia endophthalmitis being prevented with Amikacin in BSS irrigating solution. Moreover one vial of amikacin could be used for 20 BSS bottles hence being a unique and cost effective prophylactic measure in community eye care setting.
