Abstract
Aim: To determine the intraocular pressure variation between water drinking test and diurnal variation test in glaucoma suspects. Methods: Prospective observational study including twenty newly diagnosed glaucoma patients. 2 hourly IOP measurements were done for 24 hours. The next day water drinking test was performed. . IOP was measured four times at 15 minutes intervals for 1 hour. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was recorded manually using a mercury sphygmomanometer before water ingestion and then 15 minutes interval for 1 hour. Results: The mean IOP and peak IOP were strongly correlating between DVT and WDT. The IOP fluctuation between WDT and DVT however showed weak correlation. The BP measurements noted showed a slight increase in diastolic BP, while systolic level showed decrease in BP post water drinking.
Conclusion: Reliable mean and peak IOP reading can be obtained with WDT which is less time consuming, inexpensive and feasible in daily practice.
