Abstract

This is an interventional comparative study with a study population of 50 patients with unilateral Pterygium, to evaluate Tear film and Meibomian gland functional changes before and after pterygium excision with conjunctival limbal autograft (CLAG). The assessment was done by OSDI questionnaire, Schirmer’s-1 test, TBUT, TMH, scoring for Lid abnormalities, and Meibomian gland expressibility. At one month postop, the tear break-up time (11.49±3.76 s) was significantly prolonged, and TMH values were significantly improved(P=0.002). There is no significant difference in the Schirmer test value (P>0.05). The mean values for Lid abnormalities score among preop and postop are 0.45 and 0.44 respectively. The mean values for Meibum score among pre-op and post-op are 1.00 and 0.60 respectively, which is statistically significant. It concludes that Pterygium has a close relationship with tear film instability and Meibomian gland dysfunction and tear function improves after pterygium excision.
